Astrological Aspects
An aspect is a specific geometric angle between two points (planets, angles, etc.) in a birth chart. Aspects describe HOW the energies of two planets interact with each other тАФ whether harmoniously, tensionally, or in a blended way.
The Major Aspects
| Aspect | Symbol | Angle | Orb | Nature | Description |
|---|
| Conjunction | тШМ | 0┬░ | 8-10┬░ | Neutral/Powerful | Planets merge; energies blend and intensify |
| Sextile | тЪ╣ | 60┬░ | 4-6┬░ | Harmonious | Supportive, opportunities, easy flow |
| Square | тЦб | 90┬░ | 6-8┬░ | Tense/Dynamic | Friction, challenges, forced action |
| Trine | тЦ│ | 120┬░ | 6-8┬░ | Harmonious | Natural talent, ease, flow; same element |
| Opposition | тШН | 180┬░ | 6-8┬░ | Tense/Awareness | Polarity, tension, awareness through others |
The Conjunction (0┬░)
- When two planets are at the same position (or within ~8-10┬░), they are conjunct. Their energies merge and amplify each other.
- Effect depends entirely on the planets involved:
- Sun conjunct Jupiter = expansion of ego and confidence
- Sun conjunct Saturn = tension between vitality and limitation
- Venus conjunct Mars = fusion of love and desire (passion)
The Sextile (60┬░)
- A flowing, supportive aspect that creates easy opportunities. Like a door that is open тАФ you still need to walk through it, but the path is clear.
- Example: Venus sextile Mercury тАФ natural ease in articulating feelings and arts.
The Square (90┬░)
- The most dynamic and challenging major aspect. The two planets' energies are at cross-purposes тАФ they must be actively reconciled.
- Squares are NOT inherently bad тАФ they are the aspect of DRIVE and achievement. Most highly accomplished people have prominent squares in their charts.
- Example: Mars square Saturn = extraordinary tension between aggressive drive and limiting restriction, requiring disciplined channeling of energy.
The Trine (120┬░)
- The most effortlessly harmonious aspect. Planets in trine are in the same element (both Fire, both Earth, etc.) and complement each other naturally.
- The trine can indicate natural gifts that come so easily they may be taken for granted.
- Example: Moon trine Neptune = natural empathy, artistic sensitivity, and emotional intuition.
The Opposition (180┬░)
- Two planets directly across from each other. The energies polarize тАФ creating an awareness that something needs to be balanced.
- Oppositions often manifest through relationships тАФ you project the opposite planet onto others.
- Example: Venus opposite Pluto = intense, all-or-nothing quality to love relationships; deep desire vs. fear of losing control.
Minor Aspects (Secondary)
- Inconjunct / Quincunx (150┬░): Awkward "blind spot" aspect тАФ the two planets have little in common and must make continual adjustments.
- Semi-sextile (30┬░): Mildly positive but requiring some adjustment.
- Semi-square (45┬░): Minor friction.
- Sesquiquadrate (135┬░): Mild tension.
Orbs
An orb is the allowable degree of deviation from the exact angle. A conjunction at exactly 0┬░ is purest, but a conjunction within 8┬░ still counts. The closer to exact, the stronger the aspect.
Chart Patterns
When multiple planets form aspects together, they create recognizable chart patterns:
- Grand Trine: 3 planets each in trine (120┬░) to each other, all in the same element. Represents a closed circuit of easy talent тАФ often very gifted but may need challenges to develop it.
- Grand Cross (Grand Square): 4 planets in two oppositions and four squares. Represents tremendous inner tension and conflict тАФ but also incredible strength if channeled.
- T-Square: Like a Grand Cross with one arm missing. Creates a focal planet (the one opposite the empty space) that absorbs and must integrate the tension.
- Yod (Finger of God): Two planets sextile each other, both quincunx a third. Creates a compulsive, fated energy around the apex planet.
- Stellium: Three or more planets in the same sign/house тАФ concentrates enormous energy in one area.
How to Read a Birth Chart: Step-by-Step
Step 1: Establish the Big Three
- Sun Sign: Core identity and life purpose.
- Moon Sign: Emotional nature and needs.
- Rising Sign (Ascendant): How you appear and your approach to life.
Step 2: Note the Chart Shape
- Are planets spread around the whole chart (Splash) or concentrated in one area (Bundle/Locomotive)?
- A hemisphere emphasis (most planets in top half = public focus; bottom half = private) gives broad themes.
Step 3: Identify the Most Prominent Planet
- Any planet conjunct the Ascendant, Midheaven, or Sun is especially powerful.
- The most aspected planet (making the most connections) is a key player.
Step 4: Interpret Planet-Sign-House Combinations
Use the three-pillar system: Planet (WHAT) + Sign (HOW) + House (WHERE).
Step 5: Read the Aspects
- Note the closest aspects (smallest orb) тАФ these are the most powerful.
- Look for overall patterns тАФ is the chart more full of trines (ease) or squares (tension, dynamism)?
Transits
A transit occurs when a currently moving planet in the sky forms an aspect to a natal planet in your birth chart. Transits are the primary Western astrological tool for timing events and understanding current themes.
- Slow-moving transits (outer planets тАФ Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto) are the most powerful and indicate major life chapters.
- Jupiter transits (once every 12 years through each sign) bring expansion and opportunity to the natal planet they touch.
- Saturn transits (every 29.5 years back to natal Saturn = Saturn Return) bring restructuring, responsibility, and challenge.
Synastry тАФ Relationship Astrology
Synastry is the comparison of two birth charts to assess relationship compatibility and dynamics. It shows HOW two individuals interact тАФ their chemistry, friction points, areas of ease, and karmic themes.
Key Synastry Connections:
- Sun conjunct Moon: Deep soul connection тАФ one person's essence meets the other's emotional needs.
- Venus conjunct Mars: Classic romantic/sexual attraction тАФ desire meets affection.
- Saturn conjunct personal planets: A karmic, binding connection тАФ serious, often involving responsibility or limitation.
- Pluto conjunct personal planets: Intense, transformative, potentially obsessive connection.
- Moon conjunct Moon: Emotional resonance тАФ you feel understood.
The Composite Chart:
The composite chart is created by taking the midpoints of each pair of natal planets from two people's charts. It describes the RELATIONSHIP ITSELF as its own entity тАФ separate from the two individuals.
