Rajasthan District Reorganization: 2023-2025 Analysis

Rajasthan has undergone a unique two-stage administrative evolution in recent years, moving from 33 districts to 50, and finally consolidating at 41 districts.

1. The Expansion Phase (2023)

  • Committee: Ram Lubhaya Committee (formed on March 21, 2022).
  • Announcement: March 17, 2023, by then CM Ashok Gehlot.
  • Formation: August 7, 2023.
  • Initial Result: 19 new districts and 3 new divisions, bringing the total to 50 districts and 10 divisions.

2. The Consolidation Phase (Dec 2024)

The current government reviewed the previous changes based on administrative feasibility and infrastructure availability.

  • Decision: December 28, 2024, to annul 9 districts and 3 divisions.

3. Retained New Districts (The 8 Additions)

Out of the 19 districts created in 2023, the following 8 were retained:

  1. Balotra (from Barmer)
  2. Beawar (from Ajmer)
  3. Deeg (from Bharatpur)
  4. Didwana-Kuchaman (from Nagaur)
  5. Kotputli-Behror (from Jaipur/Alwar)
  6. Khairthal-Tijara (from Alwar)
  7. Phalodi (from Jodhpur)
  8. Salumber (from Udaipur)

4. Abolished Districts (Merged Back)

The following 9 districts were merged back into their parent districts in December 2024:

  • Anupgarh, Dudu, Gangapur City, Jaipur Rural, Jodhpur Rural, Kekri, Neem Ka Thana, Sanchore, Shahpura.

5. Divisional Structure (7 Divisions)

The three new divisions announced in 2023 (Pali, Sikar, Banswara) were abolished. Rajasthan returned to its classic 7 Divisions:

  1. Jaipur
  2. Jodhpur
  3. Ajmer
  4. Bikaner
  5. Kota
  6. Udaipur
  7. Bharatpur

6. Key Geographical Facts (As of 2026)

  • Largest District: Jaisalmer (38,401 sq km).
  • Smallest District: Dholpur (3,084 sq km) [Dudu, which was briefly the smallest, is now abolished].
