Regional Geography of Developed Regions
Developed regions (or the "Global North") are characterized by high levels of industrialization, advanced technology, high per capita income, excellent infrastructure, and high human development indices (HDI).
1. Anglo-America (United States and Canada)
Anglo-America represents the highly developed, predominantly English-speaking region of North America.
Physical Setting
- Western Cordilleras: A massive mountain system extending from Alaska to Mexico. Includes the Rocky Mountains, Sierra Nevada, and Cascades. Characterized by high peaks, plateaus (Colorado Plateau), and seismic activity.
- Central Plains: Vast, fertile lowlands stretching from the Arctic down to the Gulf of Mexico. Drained largely by the Mississippi-Missouri river system.
- Canadian Shield: A huge area of ancient, hard crystalline rock surrounding Hudson Bay. Scraped bare by glaciers, it is poor for agriculture but exceptionally rich in minerals.
- Appalachian Mountains: Older, heavily eroded mountain range in the east. Crucial source of coal.
Economic Geography & Resources
- Agriculture: The region is an agrarian superpower despite the small percentage of the population involved in farming. It utilizes highly mechanized, extensive farming methods.
- Wheat Belt: Prairies of Canada (Saskatchewan) and Central US (Kansas, North Dakota).
- Corn Belt: Midwest USA (Iowa, Illinois).
- Dairy Belt: Northeastern US and Great Lakes region.
- Cotton Belt: Historically the Southern US, now shifted towards Texas and California (with irrigation).
- Minerals & Energy:
- Huge reserves of Coal (Appalachians).
- Iron Ore (Mesabi Range near Lake Superior).
- Petroleum and Natural Gas (Texas, Gulf of Mexico, Alaska, Alberta in Canada).
- Industrial Regions:
- The Manufacturing Belt (Rust Belt): Historic industrial heartland from New York to Chicago. Benefited from coal and iron ore proximity via the Great Lakes.
- Sun Belt: Southern and Western US, experiencing rapid growth in high-tech, aerospace, and defense industries (e.g., Silicon Valley in California, Texas).
Demographics & Settlement
- Highly urbanized population (over 80%).
- Megalopolis: A massive, continuous urban region on the eastern seaboard (BosWash: Boston to Washington D.C.).
- Population distribution is highly uneven; Canada's population is heavily concentrated within 160 km of the US border.
